Store in the fridge and it'll last a few weeks. It emits gas, so be careful not to store next to leafy greens.

Gala apples are a great snacking fruit as they are low in calories, high in water content and offer a fair amount of vitamins A, C and B. They also contain a dietary fiber known as pectin, which has been shown to lower cholesterol levels and help prevent heart attacks. They also contain trace amounts of boron, which has been touted for its ability to help build strong bones.

Gala is a great snacking apple and ideal for chopping and adding to a salad. It’s not the best apple for baking but freezing or juicing are great uses.

Gala apples were discovered in New Zealand in 1934 by orchardist J.H. Kidd. They are a cross between Golden Delicious and Kidd’s Orange Red apples. Bearing in mind that Kidd's Orange Red is the offspring of Cox's Orange Pippin and (Red) Delicious, Gala is effectively a union of three of the world's most important and distinctive apple varieties. They made their way to the U.S. in the 1970s and were one of the first new apple introductions in a long time!

Within the last several decades a number of sports have been developed - mutations of the original variety with slightly different qualities (usually better coloration). The following varieties are all sports or tradenames of Gala: Annaglo, Galaxy, Regala, Tenroy, Mondial Gala, Royal Gala.
