Blueberries have different varietals that have different flavor profiles, much like apples. However, so far most of the buying public has not been concerned with those varieties because their visual appearance has not been significantly different. So farmers harvest and mix the berries that are ripe that day.
Like most berries, store in the fridge for 3-7 days and don't wash until right before consumption.
You can't do much better than to eat them fresh. But if they're a little too ripe or wilty, put them in yogurt, ice cream, oatmeal, or in a cobbler!
Commercial "blueberries" – including both wild ('lowbush') and cultivated ('highbush') blueberries – are all native to North America.
